Background & Business Activities
Polehn Technological Services, LLC (Polehn) is a startup company established in 2010. Business development and establishment was the primary focus of the first year of business. Founder, David Polehn, provided staff augmentation services as a Test Coordinator to a subcontractor of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Hanford Nuclear Reservation located near Richland, Washington.
Mr. Polehn spent his childhood young adult life working on his family farm and at neighboring farms and packing plants where he developed a passion for agriculture, innovation and technology. He enjoyed working with his father (in photo) to improve practices that would generate a safer working environment, improve harvest efficiency, and deliver the highest quality fruit possible.
As an FFA member and Chapter President, Mr. Polehn’s drive for excellence was reinforced with the values and vision of the FFA Creed by E.M. Tiffany. “Better days through better ways” encouraged Mr. Polehn to seek higher education.
In the spring of 2007, Mr. Polehn earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Idaho in Moscow Idaho. At the University of Idaho, Mr. Polehn was exposed to invaluable learning opportunities, where he would learn the principles of engineering, project management skills, and study lean manufacturing.
An opportunity for Mr. Polehn to combine his passion for agriculture improvement and engineering was granted by the J.R. Simplot Corporation and the Capstone, Senior Design Project for graduation from the Engineering Program in Moscow. The design problem identified by Simplot was to improve the potato knife sharpening process for the French fry cutting machine. Mr. Polehn and the “Splitting Edge” design team were able to successfully provide multiple solutions to Simplot to improve the potato knife sharpening process, with each solution addressing individual problems that contributed to the overall problem and provide the client with a return on investment.
