ALS Care Project is the only 501©3, nonprofit organization dedicated solely to improving the care of people with ALS through clinical care research and education in the community based setting. ALS Care Project began as a nonprofit organization in 2000, as a result of an endeavor by Pamela A. Cazzolli, RN, (Canton, Ohio) to improve the care of people with ALS since 1984.





ALS stands for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and is popularly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. ALS is the most disabling of all neurologic diseases and can strike any adult. Average ages of onset are 40’s to 70’s. The incidence of ALS is equal to multiple sclerosis. ALS results in progressive weakness of the skeletal muscles which move the body. Ultimately, ALS results in respiratory failure and death, unless breathing support is used. Although there is no treatment to stop the disease, ALS can be managed.







Goals of ALS Care Project are to help prevent avoidable complications, emergency hospitalizations, undesired outcomes, early mortality, and unnecessary costs of patients with ALS worldwide. Programs of ALS Care Project include: [1] collaborative research to help establish guidelines for respiratory care of ALS [2] writing for publication [3] educational programs for healthcare professionals and patient families [4] nursing consultation and [5] an educational website (alscareproject.org). Our specialties include managing disability, breathing support and comfort care.







Education on ALS care is key for achieving planned, desired outcomes, and make a significant difference in lives of people with ALS.
