Contacts Lisa Goodwin The Laurie Mitchell Empowerment and Career Center (LMECC) was established as a consumer-operated drop-in center in 1995 by a group of people with mental health issues who wanted to support other people in their situation with increased opportunities for socialization and potential employment in the competitive marketplace. LMECC offers free and confidential computer training in popular software applications as well as workshops about issues in the workplace. Training is available in Microsoft Office Suite (certification), Front Page, QuickBooks, Networking Basics and Adobe PhotoShop. Knowledge of all of these applications is in demand in the competitive marketplace. We also offer training in using the Internet and in using Email which will allow you to research virtually anything you can think of and build a network of others with email. When you are familiar with cyberspace you can find support groups of people with interests like your own so that you can reach out into the world to give and receive information about an unlimited number of topics. We offer training to people with mental health issues, other disabilities and those who have other barriers to socialization and employment including language and being economically disadvantaged. Anyone who comes through LMECC's doors is welcome to our services. One of the most important facts about LMECC is that our Center is staffed primarily by people who are mental health consumers and therefore can easily relate to the various issues posed by program participants. We know what it means to have mental health issues and other disabilities and can relate to you on a peer-to-peer basis in a very humanistic and safe environment. In 2007, LMECC received the U.S. Secretary of Labor's New Freedom Initiative Award for its xemplary and innovative efforts to further employment for people with disabilities.
