Magic Valley is committed to superior service for all its members. Because our members count on round-the-clock electric power, MVEC?s employees are ready to respond, day or night, in all types of weather. When you call MVEC with a question or problem, you?re in touch with someone local. Whatever your concern, you can count on our people to respond courteously and promptly. At Magic Valley, ?service? means member satisfaction. We believe the job isn?t done until it?s done right.
When private utility companies would not extend electric service to rural South Texas, a small band of farmers and ranchers joined together to form the Magic Valley Cooperative. They signed a note for $200,000 and began construction of 75 miles of power lines. Eleven months later, the lights went on in the homes of Magic Valley?s first 125 members.
Today, Magic Valley has over 4,373 miles of energized line serving more than 85,724 meters. From the beginning, Magic Valley has been a national leader in fiscal management and member service: first in the nation to make across the board capital credit refunds to members, and first in the state to use two-way radios in service trucks. Then and now, our members have relied on Magic Valley to provide affordable power and outstanding service. At Magic Valley Electric Cooperative, ?heritage? means more than history. It means a past dedicated to building a future that shines brightly for all our members now, and those to come
When you get your power or other services from Magic Valley, you?re more than a customer; you?re an owner. That?s because Magic Valley is a non-profit, member-owned cooperative. Co-ops are owned by the people they serve, not shareholders. As a co-op member, you have a voice and a vote. Our board of directors is elected by ? and answers to ? you, our members.
What does membership mean to you? It means that your co-op management team makes decisions based on direct benefit to members, not profitability. Like private utilities, we use the power of numbers to buy electricity and equipment at the lowest possible price. Unlike them, we pass our savings on to our members. At Magic Valley, we work for you ? and only you.
Our Power Supply
South Texas Electric Cooperative (STEC)
South Texas Electric Cooperative was formed in 1944 to provide wholesale electric power to member cooperatives. Presently the South Texas Electric Cooperative serves eight distribution cooperatives; Karnes, Wharton County, Victoria, Jackson, San Patricio, Nueces, Magic Valley and Medina electric cooperatives. These cooperatives provide service to over 170,000 members in 65 South Texas counties.
The cooperative?s headquarters are located in Nursery Texas, at the Sam Rayburn generating plant. One hundred and sixty employees are based at the Sam Rayburn plant while another twenty-two are based at the Pearsall generation facility.
STEC?s power is generated utilizing a variety of fuels, including lignite, natural gas, diesel and hydro. These resources include a 50% share in the San Miguel Electric Cooperative lignite generation plant located in Christine Texas; the Sam Rayburn facility which is a combination of resources including dual-fuel, combined-cycle generation; and the Pearsall facility, a gas-fired unit located in Pearsall Texas. The remaining resource is the output of the Amistad-Falcon hydro project.
The South Texas Electric Cooperative (STEC) has also concluded an agreement with Iberdrola Renewables, Inc. for 50 MW of clean renewable energy from the Peñascal project, the first wind project to be built on the Texas coast. This agreement will make STEC?s members the latest electric cooperatives in Texas to integrate clean renewable energy into their generation mix.
