In 2006, members of the Central Arizona Chapter and the Rio Salado Chapter voted to combine membership and the Phoenix Metro Chapter was born. Serving the greater metropolitan area of the Valley of the Sun, the Phoenix Metro Chapter has nearly 900 members, four sections and more than a dozen committees.
AIA Central Arizona was chartered by the American Institute of Architects on March 14, 1956. James Elmore, FAIA was the first President of the Central Arizona Chapter. In the late 1980?s the name was changed to AIA Central Arizona.
The AIA Rio Salado Chapter was chartered in November of 1978. The first chapter meeting was held that month when East Valley architects gathered at a cafeteria style restaurant on the Tempe-Mesa border. The AIA national charter was on display at that meeting and all members were invited to add their names to the new chapter charter. The meeting was run by Dr. Bob Hershberger, FAIA, who at the time was the acting dean of ASU's College of Architecture. In electing a president, Bob simply announced, "we need to elect a president, so I think it appropriate that our oldest member, Martin Ray Young, AIA serve as our first chapter president." It was quickly moved, seconded, and approved by acclimation with no debate. Mr. Young had been railroaded right into serving, but looked clearly happy with the decision. The next vigilante-style nomination came immediately thereafter from the floor. It was moved, seconded, and approved by unanimous vote for Bob Hershberger, FAIA to be the president-elect and to serve as president the following year.
