Blockages in the neck increase the risk for strokes and ministrokes. This risk can be reduced with medical therapy, surgery and stenting. Peripheral arterial disease causes decreased circulation to the legs. This can usually be managed medically with exercise and life-style changes. Some patients require interventions to improve the flow using catheters and stents. Others require open bypass surgery. An aneurysm is ballooning of a blood vessel. Some aneurysms can burst if they get too big (like aneurysms in the belly) and that can lead to death from bleeding in the belly. Other aneurysms can get clogged up (more common in the legs) and that could lead to limb loss. Patents with renal failure might require access for dialysis (temporary via a catheter in the neck or permanent via an arteriovenous fistula or graft placed in the arm). Leg swelling and varicose veins can result from reflux in the veins in the legs. Some patients benefit from simple procedures that address the problem.
