A culture is born.
The consultant relentlessly peppered us with difficult questions:
"What will you insist on no matter what, EVEN if it becomes unprofitable?"
"What gets you out of bed in the morning? What gives meaning to work & life?"
"What guides your thinking, your strategic approach, your decisions, your actions?"
"What is most important to your success?"
"What do you appreciate most about your best people?"
It was 2010. WebMechanix was barely a year old. We needed customers. We needed people. We needed systems. We needed processes. Certainly it wasn't the time to think of some silly mission statement & a set of core values!
We considered firing the consultant & being on our way. But for some reason, we didn't. We answered the questions. He told us think about them longer, adjust the answers, let them marinate for a while. We soul-searched.
What emerged became our mission & core values.
We call them the 'Why' & the 'How'. To be frank, at first it was almost purely lip service. "Yay, we have core values, let's talk about them!" you can imagine us saying skeptically.
But something weird started happening. As we talked about them more, we started thinking about them more. People started consulting them when they had tough decisions. We started using them in our hiring & management decisions. We started living them. Today, everything we do is driven by these ideas.
